This is very important to create a backup of the Registry for the safe side and you can restore that backup anytime to the exact same values and settings of your registry. Creating a backup of the registry is good if someone even messed up with the registry settings, you can restore all the settings to their original from that backup.

There are two options to create a backup of your Registry, the one is to create a system restore point and the second is to back up the registry manually. With the system restore point, you can restore your whole operating system (OS) backup including the registry to the exact state it was when the backup was created. While creating a backup of the registry manually will allow you to restore the registry backup only.

  • First of all, click on the Start button and type Run or simply press the Windows + R keys from your keyboard and the run command will open.
  • Type Regedit and click on OK or press the Enter button.

  • On the next screen, you will be prompted for an administrator confirmation, click on YES to grant admin access and the Registry Editor will now open.

  • Click on Computer and then File Menu and lastly click on Export. (We select Computer which means it will create the whole Registry Backup. If you want to create a backup for a specific Registry Key then select that and click on File Menu and then Export).

  • After clicking on the Export button, you will be asked to select the location where you want to save the registry backup and then type a name for the backup file in the file name field.
  • Click on Save and the backup is created.
